Project Description

Modern computer programmes can accurately predict the risk of stent fracture in clinically-relevant cases. However, due to the complexity of such calculations, analysis of a single case might require hours to days, which is a time frame that is not compatible with clinical workflows. RT3S will extrapolate a probabilistic description of the fracture risk for an implanted stent based on a limited set of highly-detailed, numerical simulations of clinical cases. Once this response surface is available, it will be included in a real-time simulation toolbox that is capable of providing the risk of stent fracture associated with a set of patient-specific and surgery-specific input parameters in a few seconds.

RT3S will include extensive validation throughout the entire life of the project. RT3S will pay particular attention to validation of the software toolbox to check that its implementation does not compromise the accuracy of the response surface. Once the computer-aided planning application is available, RT3S clinical partners will receive a copy of the software and will repeat the pre-operative planning on a group of selected cases that have already been treated, some of which are known to have resulted in stent fracture complications.

In parallel, a dual-level (junior and senior) training tool for interventional surgeons will be developed in order to provide the system with a formative module with adapted contents to allow the students to simulate the result of interventions and learn to make better decisions before undertaking practical cases.
